Call asset clicks but no phone calls: 2 numbers that look like 1

· 2 min read

In short

In the assets report, Clicks counts all clicks on ads shown with the call asset, mostly visits to your site. Segment by click type to see taps on the number. Calls only appear with call reporting on, a Google forwarding number, and a call longer than your minimum duration.

What the Clicks column counts

Next to a call asset, Clicks is the clicks your ad got while that asset was showing. A person who tapped the headline and went to your website is in that number too. So 28 clicks and 0 calls can simply mean 28 people visited your site.

See the taps on the number

On the Campaigns, Ad groups, Ads or Keywords tab, click the Segment icon and choose Click type. The click types become rows in the table. The row for taps on the call button on phones is the one about calls (Google's help names it "Mobile clicks-to-call"). A tap still costs the same as a click on the headline.

Why calls can stay at zero

A tap on the number is not yet a call that Google can see. For Google to count it:

  • Call reporting must be on. You find it in Account settings, in the Call reporting section.
  • The ad must show a Google forwarding number. That number routes the call to you and lets Google record duration and time. It is not available in every country: if the option is missing from your settings, your country or account type may not support it.
  • For the conversion, the call must last longer than the minimum duration set in the Calls from ads conversion action. Shorter calls are in the call report but not in Conversions.

If your ad shows your own number instead of a forwarding one, people dial you directly and Google never learns the call happened. The phone rings, the report stays empty.

A quick check

  1. Preview the ad on a phone. Is the number yours or a Google number?
  2. Look in Account settings for Call reporting. Is it on?
  3. Look at the Calls from ads conversion action. Is it Primary, and what minimum duration does it use?
